Treatments

At Dry Eye Wales, we recognise the importance of maintaining optimal eyelid health and hygiene, especially for those dealing with conditions like demodex blepharitis.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Lid exfoliation uses special tools to manually remove the crusts and debris which have built up along the eyelash base and eyelid margin from bacteria and mites. In some stubborn cases, where collarettes are well established we may ask you to come in for heat therapy beforehand to soften the matter and increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

Our specialised lid exfoliation appointments offer 3 effective treatment options.

1. Lid Exfoliation with Tea Tree Oil (TTO) solution:

This treatment uses an electronic device to apply a specially designed foam with eye safe concentrations of TTO. TTO is widely used to manage blepharitis caused by Demodex mites, which can lead to inflammation and irritation of the eyelid margins. This treatment helps with demodex blepharitis as well as all forms of blepharitis by:

  • Reducing Mite Populations: Regular use of diluted tea tree oil can help reduce the population of Demodex mites on the eyelids, leading to a decrease in inflammation and irritation caused by their presence.
  • Antimicrobial Action: TTO has strong antimicrobial properties that help to eliminate bacteria and other pathogens around the eyelid margin.
  • Anti-Inflammatory/ Soothing effect: TTO can help reduce the redness, swelling, and irritation associated with blepharitis.
  • Cleansing and Exfoliation: TTO can help break down the oily secretions and crusts that accumulate along the eyelid margin.
  • Improves Eyelid Hygiene: Regular use of diluted TTO in eyelid cleansers can enhance overall eyelid hygiene, preventing the re-occurrence of blepharitis.

While TTO is an effective treatment for Demodex blepharitis, there are 2 main risks and side effects to consider:

Dryness or Excessive Peeling: While TTO can help with exfoliation, it may also cause excessive dryness or peeling of the skin around the eyes in some individuals.

Eye Irritation: If TTO gets into the eyes, it can cause significant irritation, stinging, and redness. Care must be taken to avoid direct contact with the eyes when using tea tree oil, especially when applying it near the eyelid margin.

2. Lid Exfoliation with a Zocushield

This treatment uses an electronic device to apply a specially designed gel, containing okra polysaccharides, that provides an effective, but more gentle alternative to tea tree oil, with generally no side effects. This can be beneficial for patients with more sensitive skin, those who experience irritation with TTO, or anyone seeking a milder, yet effective, treatment. Whilst TTO is potent if it gets into the eye, okra compounds usually have no effect at all, and in some cases even has a beneficial effect by reducing redness.

3. Lid Exfoliation with ZEST

ZEST is a cutting-edge exfoliation treatment designed to provide effective, immediate and substantial relief from blepharitis. This treatment focuses on the thorough cleansing of the eyelid margin by one of our specialist optometrists with a significantly greater concentration of okra polysaccharides, helping to resolve any buildup of oils, debris, and dead skin cells. ZEST is unique in its ability to safety but powerfully:

  • Deep Cleanse: ZEST offers a deeper level of cleansing than traditional treatments, ensuring that the eyelid margins are thoroughly exfoliated and free of debris.
