At Dry Eye Wales, we offer a range of effective treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), with one of the most targeted being Meibomian Gland Expression. This procedure is designed to relieve dry eye symptoms by clearing blockages in the meibomian glands manually after heat is applied.
What Is Meibomian Gland Expression?
Meibomian gland expression is a specialised treatment aimed at restoring the function of the meibomian glands, which are essential for producing the oily layer of your tear film. When these glands become clogged with old, toxic meibum, it can lead to dry, irritated eyes and atrophy of the meibomian glands. This procedure helps to effectively clear blockages, improving the quality of your tears and overall eye comfort and health.
How Does the Procedure Work?
During your appointment, you will have heat applied to your eyes for 15 mins using Activa technology. Following this you then have the option to use anaesthetic drops to partially numb the area during the procedure. Our optometrists will begin by debriding and dekeratinizing the lid margin using a special tool. This process gently removes any debris, keratin and dead skin cells that may be obstructing the glands.
After the initial preparation, we will apply gentle pressure to either side of your eyelid using special forceps to express the meibomian glands. This technique effectively clears blockages and removes old meibum, allowing for the free flow of newer oils necessary for healthy tears. The entire procedure is carefully documented using our high-definition slit lamp cameras, ensuring you have a visual record of the treatment progress. We will explain what the appearance of your meibum means for you and show you how it affects your tear film.
What Are the Benefits of Meibomian Gland Expression?
Many patients experience immediate relief from dry eye symptoms following Meibomian Gland Expression. Benefits include:
- Improved Eye Comfort: By removing blockages, you may notice a significant reduction in irritation and discomfort.
- Enhanced Tear Quality: Restoring the natural flow of oils helps to stabilise the tear film, preventing evaporation and resulting in clearer, more stable vision.
- Long-Lasting Results: Regular treatments (usually every 3-6 months) can lead to improved meibomian gland function over time, reducing the frequency of dry eye episodes.
What Can You Expect After the Procedure?
After your Meibomian Gland Expression, you may experience some immediate relief, though it’s not uncommon to have a brief adjustment period after expression.
